Worldwide mobile phone sales totalled 286.1 million units in the second quarter of 2009, a 6.1 per cent decrease from the second quarter of 2008, according to Gartner. The global economic downturn had a significant impact on the mobile phone industry as worldwide mobile phone sales to end users totalled 314.7 million units in the fourth quarter of 2008, a 4.6 per cent decline from the fourth quarter of 2007, according to Gartner. Economic Downturn Sparked a Battle for 3rd Place in Mobile Phone Market

Worldwide sales of mobile phones to end-users reached more than 309 million units in the third quarter of 2008, a 6 per cent increase compared to the third quarter of 2007, according to Gartner. Qualcomm Warns of Slowing Handset Replacement Cycle

Qualcomm CEO, Paul Jacobs says that there are signs that mobile phone owners are delaying plans to replace their existing handsets - slowing the replacement cycle. Speaking in an interview on CNBC television, he said that the trend has been most noticeable in Japan and South Korea. However, sales of smartphones appeared to be remaining strong.  more

Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales Increased 12% in Q2 of 2008

Worldwide sales of mobile phones reached close to 305 million units in the second quarter of 2008, a 11.8 percent increase over the second quarter of 2007, according to Gartner. Sales of mobile phones in the mature markets of Western Europe and North America slightly recovered after a difficult start. Western Europe reached close to 42 million units while North America surpassed 44 million units in the second quarter of 2008.  more

Gartner Says Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales on Pace to Grow 11% in 2008

Worldwide sales of mobile phones will reach 1.28 billion units in 2008, an 11 per cent increase from last year, says Gartner. In 2007, worldwide mobile phone sales reached 1.15 billion units. Worldwide mobile phone sales in the first quarter of 2008 reached 294.3 million, and Gartner expects sales in the second quarter of 2008 to be between 300 million and 305 million units.  more
