South Korean W-CDMA base exceeds EV-DO in fourth quarter

All three South Korean operators have now reported their Q4 08 results. The South Korean market is one of the most stable in the world, and it was thus no surprise that market shares remained unchanged both quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year, with SK Telecom (SKT) on 50.5%, KT Freetel (KTF) on 31.5% and lg Telecom (lgT) on 18.0%. In fact, barring a minor blip in June, there was no change in market shares on a monthly basis either throughout 2008.  more

Asia-Pacific Continues to be the Strongest Region for CDMA

The CDMA Development Group (CDG) today announced that the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region once again leads the global CDMA ecosystem in terms of subscribers, revenue and service creation. As APAC operators continue to develop and enhance their core 3G CDMA networks, CDMA2000 subscribership in the region remains the largest in the world and operators in the region are seeing some of the highest wireless data revenues in the industry.  more

Asia-Pacific CDMA Growth Slows to an All-Time Low

GSM continues to increase its dominance of the Asia Pacific market. Of the 99m new connections made in the quarter, only 13m chose any other standard and of those, 11.3m went for the GSM-enhancement, W-CDMA. Nearly 80% of all customers in the region now use GSM - 1.232bn out of 1.545bn - with CDMA the only other real contender. At the end of June, there were 191.3m customers connected to the various forms of this standard slightly up on the 189.4m at the end of March.  more

LG Telecom's CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Rev. A Data Service, Thrives in Korea

The CDMA Development Group (CDG) has commented that lg Telecom's new CDMA2000 1x EV-DO Rev. A data service is flourishing in the highly-competitive Korean wireless services market, adding about 100,000 new data subscribers per month to its 3G data service, "OZ" ("Open Zone"). The service has already resulted in a 14% increase in data average revenue per user (ARPU) from the previous quarter and a total of 287,000 OZ subscribers at the end of July.  more

Touchscreen–equipped mobile handset shipments to exceed 230 million by 2012

Touchscreen-equipped mobile handsets sales have been building steadily for over a year now, and a new report from IMS Research forecasts that growth will become even stronger. Although there were fewer than 30 million touchscreen phones sold in 2007, IMS Research expect that number to increase to over 230 million by 2012.  more

Asia Pacific - W-CDMA base grows 74% in the year, EV-DO base up 17.7%

Asia Pacific saw record 3G net additions in Q1 2008 as 13.3m new connections were made, taking the total to 136.3m - a 53.7% increase with respect to Q1 2007. Here we only include CDMA EV-DO, and not standard 1x connections, as 3G; including 1x connections the total rose 37.7% to 264.3m. However, the source of growth in the base was undoubtedly W- CDMA, the 3G technology of the GSM family which accounted for almost 86% of all the mobile connections in Asia Pacific at the end of March. The number of W-CDMA customers grew 74% in the year to reach 98.4m, with a record 12.3m new customers joining in Q1 2008.  more

Slowing Handset Replacements in Nth America Could Slow Global Sales Growth

A report from South Korean research house, Korea Investment & Securities says that it expects sales of mobile phones worldwide to have risen by 11.7% YoY to 281 million units. In 2008, the handset demand growth is forecast to drop 4.2%p YoY to 12.1% from 16.3%, due to sluggish replacement demand in North America and anemic new demand in emerging markets.  more

3G Subscribers in South Korea Jump as SK Telecom Promotes Services

Korea Investments & Securities reports that in September, the number of mobile telecom subscribers in South Korea grew 291,183 MoM to 42.8 million, and the service penetration rate rose to 87.9%.
Monthly net additions, which plunged to 59,101 in July, the lowest figure this year and to 131,000 in August, rebounded to the level of 1H07's monthly average thanks to the lower churn rate.  more
