LG Electronics Profits Up Although Mobile Phone Sales Down

South Korea's lg Electronics has reported that its net profit for the first quarter of 2010 rose significantly to KRW 675 billion (US$590 million), compared to a loss of KRW 200 billion (US$142 million) a year earlier. Equity method gain of KRW 219 billion (US$191 million) from affiliates helped push up net profit. In particular, lg Display booked an equity method gain of KRW 230 billion (US$201 million). Mobile phone revenues were however hit by lower handset prices and a quiet quarter.  more

LG to Offer Mobile Screens with More Colours and Lower Power Drain

Nanosys has signed a commercial agreement with lg Innotek (lgIT) - a subsidiary of South Korea's lg Electronics - for the use of its quantum dot phosphors for use in mobile phone displays. The deal represents the first real world commercial application of quantum dots in electronics.  more

Nokia Sues Over Allegations of LCD Display Price Fixing

Nokia has filed lawsuits in the UK and USA against a number of companies, alleging that they operated price-fixing cartels for mobile phone display screens. The lawsuit also includes claims against computer monitor display suppliers, who had sold components to a former Nokia subsidiary, Nokia Display Products.  more

LG Shows Off Latest Chocolate Phone

lg Electronics (lg) has revealed today the full image and key specifications of the new lg Chocolate phone (model: lg-BL40). The fourth handset of the Black Label Series boasts a 4-inch wide screen high-definition LCD with an 800 by 345 pixel resolution. The wide screen breaks away from conventional screen designs with a 21:9 aspect ratio for a cinema-like quality.  more

Fitch Revises Outlook to Negative on Samsung & LG Electronics

Fitch Ratings says that it has revised its rating Outlook on Samsung Electronics (SEC) and lg Electronics (lgE) to Negative from Stable. At the same time, Hynix Semiconductor's (Hynix) Long-term foreign currency (FC) IDR and senior unsecured debt ratings, which are currently at 'B+', remain on Rating Watch Negative (RWN).  more

LG Offers More Details of Flagship Touchscreen Phone

lg has given more details of the lg ARENA (lg-KM900) phone, which was previewed last week. ARENA, lg's new flagship model for 2009 features a totally new 3D user interface, which in some regards reflects how some Linux based computers can be configured to work. Economic Downturn Sparked a Battle for 3rd Place in Mobile Phone Market

Worldwide sales of mobile phones to end-users reached more than 309 million units in the third quarter of 2008, a 6 per cent increase compared to the third quarter of 2007, according to Gartner. Growth dipped back into single figures, representing less than half the 16 per cent growth rate of the same period in 2007.  more

Nokia getting on top of handset media portability

Nokia has greatly extended the range of its multimedia codec support in the fifth edition of its S60 platform for Symbian OS, in an effort to overcome the problems of multimedia portability arising from codec proliferation. An important addition to the core is Microsoft's Windows Media Audio (WMA) format, which largely completes Nokia's audio codec support. However, some gaps still remain, notably the DivX Internet video codec and the popular, and free, Ogg family.  more

LG Electronics Gross Profits Up - but Hit by Currency Woes

South Korea's lg Electronics has reported a sharp jump in 3rd quarter profits to KRW 571 billion (US$537 million) - a 58% rise on a year ago. At the same time, sales rose by 21% to KRW 6.887 trillion (US$6.479 billion). The profit margin was 4.8%, 1.2%P higher than a year earlier.  more
