Fractus Sues Ten Cellphone Manufacturers for Patent Infringement
Ten mobile phone vendors are being sued for allegedly infringing patents relating to internal antennas used on their handsets. Spanish antenna manufacturer, Fractus says that is has sued Samsung, lg, RIM, Pantech, Kyocera, Palm, HTC, Sharp, UTStarcom, and Sanyo for infringing nine different patents. more

LG Tops Traditional Phone User Satisfaction Ranking
Apple ranks highest in customer satisfaction with smartphone manufacturers, while lg ranks highest among traditional mobile phone users, according to a couple of J.D. Power and Associates reports. The studies measure customer satisfaction with traditional wireless handsets and smartphones across several key factors. In order of importance, key factors in examining traditional wireless handsets are operation (30%); physical design (30%); features (20%); and battery function (20%). Among residential smartphone owners, key factors are ease of operation (30%); operating system (22%); features (21%); physical design (18%); and battery function (9%). more

Global Handset Shipments Fall at Fastest Rate in History during Q1 2009
According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global mobile handset shipments fell a huge 13 percent year-over-year, to reach 245 million units in Q1 2009. Worldwide Mobile Phone Shipments Down by 15.8% in First Quarter
The worldwide mobile phone market began 2009 with an expected sequential downturn, exacerbated by the challenges of the ongoing worldwide recession. According to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped a total of 244.8 million units in the first quarter of 2009 (1Q09), approximately 15.8% lower than the 290.8 million units shipped during 1Q08. The first quarter of a new year is typically characterized by seasonally lower shipment volumes following a busy holiday quarter with channels clearing out excess inventory. But the 1Q09 decline was especially sharp due to weak end-user demand, currency volatility, and lack of credit for merchants as consumers and the supply chain adapt to the recession. more

Mobile Handset Market Stays Afloat with 258 Million Shipped in 1Q-2009
Despite tough corporate and unemployment news making the headlines, the mobile handset-buying public did not head to the hills during the first quarter of 2009. Handset vendors had shipped 258 million handsets by the end of the quarter. Although that represents an 11% year-over-year decline, the result significantly exceeded the previous forecast of 253.5 million. LG Electronics Swings into Q1 Loss on Forex Losses
lg Electronics has swung into a first-quarter loss of KRW 198 billion (US$141 million) primarily as a result of foreign exchange loss of US$224 million and equity method loss of US$150 million from overseas subsidiaries and affiliates. lg Display, in which lg Electronics has a 37.9% stake, booked an equity method loss of US$64 million. more
