LG See Profits Boosted by Foreign Exchange Gains and LCD TV Sales
LG Electronics has posted a 62% jump in Q2 net profit of KRW1.15 trillion (US$919 million), while sales rose by 13.8% to KRW 14.50 trillion (US$11.23 billion). The quarterly net profit was boosted by a KRW 285.7 billion in foreign exchange gains. The bulk of the rise was also attributed to the company's LCD television division. more

LG Phones Launching Own App Store
LG is planning to beta-launch its own mobile phone applications store tomorrow (14th July), with the focus initially in Asia with the service being expanded to 24 countries. LG expects to offer up to 2,000 applications on its site by the end of year with at least 100 programs available free of charge to LG handset users. more
LG Shows Off Windows Mobile Phone with 3D Menus
LG Electronics has shown off its first Windows Mobile 6.1 smartphone that has been integrated with LG's 3D S-Class User Interface. Built-around a 3D cube layout, the S-Class UI eliminates nested menus wherever possible, providing more direct access to features and applications. A simple flick of a finger rotates the cube so that any one of its five faces can be accessed instantly. more

Nortel to Seek Buyer for Stake in LG-Nortel Joint Venture
Nortel has confirmed that it has decided to seek a buyer for its majority stake (50% + 1 share) in LG-Nortel, the company's Korean joint venture with LG Electronics. Nortel, which is in bankruptcy protection said that LG-Nortel is a profitable, standalone business with a strong balance sheet, and has not filed for creditor protection. more

LG to Close Mexican Handset Factory
South Korea's LG Electronics is to close a handset factory in Mexico and shift production to an existing facility in Brazil, affecting around 200 employees. The plant is being closed after the Mexican government recently scraped a 15% import duty on mobile phones, which also eliminated the cost benefit of having a local facility within the country. more
LG Electronics Swings into Q1 Loss on Forex Losses
LG Electronics has swung into a first-quarter loss of KRW 198 billion (US$141 million) primarily as a result of foreign exchange loss of US$224 million and equity method loss of US$150 million from overseas subsidiaries and affiliates. LG Display, in which LG Electronics has a 37.9% stake, booked an equity method loss of US$64 million. more

LG Claims 2 Million Touchscreen Phone Sales
LG Electronics has announced that its touchscreen phone, the LG Cookie (LG-KP500) has recorded over two million unit sales worldwide in the five months since its debut last October. More than 1.2 million handsets have been sold in Europe, and 600,000 Cookies have been sold in Asia and the emerging markets, including Latin America. In Korea, LG Cookie is currently the most popular handset with 100,000 units in accumulated sales as of March this year and record one-day sales of 4,500 units. more

Fitch Ratings says that it has revised its rating Outlook on Samsung Electronics (SEC) and LG Electronics (LGE) to Negative from Stable. LG Offers More Details of Flagship Touchscreen Phone
LG has given more details of the LG ARENA (LG-KM900) phone, which was previewed last week.
