China's Handset Sales Volume Fell in Q2 2006
Analysys International has reported that China's handset sales volume totalled 22.07 million by the end of the second quarter of 2006, a drop of 2.01% over last quarter. According to a new report, sales volume of GSM handsets reached 20.51 million sets, a decrease of 2.01% over last quarter; thanks to China Unicom's low-price handset customization strategy and further adjustment of channels, the sales volume of CDMA handsets kept on increasing to reach 1.57 million sets, increased 7.44% over last quarter. more

Nokia and Motorola Boost Chip Spending in 2005 and 2006
Leading mobile-phone makers Nokia and Motorola will increase their semiconductor spending by the highest percentage among the world's top-10 OEM chip buyers in 2005 and 2006, iSuppli Corp. predicts. Top-ranked mobile-phone brand Nokia will boost its chip spending by 15.1 percent in 2006 as an encore to its 12.7 percent increase in 2005, according to data from iSuppli's OEM Semiconductor Spend Analysis service. Number-two mobile-phone OEM, Motorola is projected to increase its semiconductor purchasing by 14.5 percent in 2006, following a 20.7 percent rise in 2005. more

Nokia Tops Greenpeace Green Ranking
The environmental pressure group, Greenpeace has published a 'Guide to Greener Electronics', which ranks companies on their use of harmful chemicals and electronic waste recycling. The organisation says that the guide will be used to create demand for toxic-free electronics which can be safely recycled, by informing consumers about company performance on these two issues. The scorecard ranks the 14 top mobile and PC producers and currently all fail to get a green ranking. more

Vodafone Offers Unlimited 3G Data Tariff
Vodafone Ireland says that is launching a flat-rate 3G data service offering unlimited data usage for a fixed fee of EUR49 (US$63). Later this year, Vodafone will also launch its HSDPA upgrade. Initially in Dublin, then expanding throughout the country. This will allow customers to access the Internet at speeds of up to 1.2 Megabits per second as part of the Vodafone Unlimited Data package. The technology will utilise Vodafone's 3G network which already caters for Vodafone's 250,000 3G customers. more

Motorola Misses Greenpeace's Toxic Target
The environmental campaign group, Greenpeace has repeated its condemnation of Motorola for missing targets to cease the use of toxic chemicals inside its cellphones. The comments came as Dell Computers announced plans to remove key toxic chemicals from its PCs laptops and other products and to move to 'clean production'. Hewlett Packard, LGE, Nokia, Samsung, Sony and Sony Ericsson have already made commitments to eliminate the use of some hazardous chemicals in the near future. more

Nokia Tops Brand Survey in China
Nokia has topped a survey of the most admired cellphone brands in China. Chief Executive China magazine, published by Global Sources, released the results of its Second Annual "Top 10 Executive Brands in China.", which placed Nokia in the top spot. The survey drew responses from 2,452 business managers on 19 categories of products and services they regularly use. Criteria included brand admiration, brand advantage, brand preference, brand vitality and relevance. more

China's Analysys International says total sales volume of mobile phones reached 22.38 million units in China in the first quarter of 2006, increasing 7.32% over the previous quarter. According to the research report, China's GSM handset market continued rising in the first quarter, with sales volume reaching 20.92 million units; CDMA handset market began to rebound in the first quarter after declining for continuous four quarters in 2005, with sales volume reaching 1.35 million units. more
