Improving Mobile Phone Coverage Across Lake Victoria
Mobile phone coverage across Africa's Lake Victoria is to be expanded in a joint venture between Zain, and Ericsson, in an initiative coordinated by the GSM Association. The coverage will comprise the area of the lake where 80 percent of fishing activities take place, allowing communication and SMS exchange to and from phones. This enhancement will fuel economic and social development of the lakeside communities and potentially reduce the number of fishing-related deaths each year. more

Mobile Phone Towers to Monitor African Weather
A new partnership has been announced that will place weather monitoring stations on up to 5,000 mobile phone towers operated by Zain, and other mobile networks, across the African continent. The initiative is being backed by the Global Humanitarian Forum, Ericsson, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Earth Institute at Columbia University. more

Africa's Largest Inland Lake gets GSM Coverage
The 200,000 fisherman that work on Lake Victoria will soon have the opportunity to use mobile phones to call for help if they get into trouble on the Africa's largest inland lake. Pan-Africa mobile operator Celtel, a subsidiary of Zain, and Ericsson, in an initiative coordinated by the GSMA's Development Fund, have committed to extend the mobile networks across the Lake Victoria region. more

MTN reports strong growth in Uganda
South Africa's MTN Group has reported that its Ugandan subsidiary, MTN Uganda, has exceeded the 400,000 subscriber mark, a 10.8% increase since 30 June 2003. Despite a competitive telecommunications environment, MTN Uganda has managed to retain its leading position in the Ugandan telecommunications market where it holds 64% total market share (both its fixed and mobile services). more
