3G Users in South Korea Will Pass 23 Million by 2010
According to the new research report by ROA Group, the number of mobile users in South Korea will reach 41.95 million by 2010, which is 85% of the total population in South Korea. In a new report, ROA Group forecasts that solid growth for WCDMA (3G) is expected in the near future and the number of users is expected to increase to 23.05 million by 2010. CDMA EV-DO subscribers recorded 15.3 million in 2006 but the number of users is expected to decrease in the future. more

The worldwide use of mobile phones for payments at point of sale is the aim of a new initiative announced by the GSM Association (GSMA), the global trade organization for mobile operators. The 'Pay-Buy Mobile' initiative is a natural progression for the industry, following the GSMA's program - announced last year - to define a common global approach to enabling Near Field Communications (NFC), the technology used to link mobile devices with payment and contactless systems. more

Pantech to Launch Wide LCD Terrestrial DMB Phone
South Korea's Pantech has announced the launch of the IM-U160 handset, a new terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) handset that can be effectively used as a portable TV with its wide LCD screen. The new IM-U160 includes a 2.6-inch wide QVGA LCD screen, and features an aspect ratio - the ratio of the width of the LCD display screen to the height - of 15:9, considerably in advance of the 4:3 screen ratios usually offered by other mobile phones. more
SK Telecom Customers Have Highest South Korean Average Bill
The latest study from Marketing Insight into South Korea's telecoms market has reported that the average monthly mobile phone charge is 34,000 won and SK Telecom subscribers and the 20s age group pay the highest mobile bills. The high fee seems to come from use of additional services and wireless Internet. Monthly charges of voice calls, additional services, and use of wireless Internet and data (excluding subscription fee and handset payment in installments) increased 1.5% (around 500 won) compared to the second wave (the same period of the last year) and showed no big difference with the third wave (the first half of this year). more

South Korean Number Portability Reaches Record High
Korea Investment & Securities has issued a research report where they expect 2Q sales in South Korea's operators will be up 5.5% YoY thanks to subscriber growth while operating profit will be down 4% YoY due to massive fines and higher marketing expenses. By company, the 2Q06 operating profits of SKT and ktf should decline 2% and 17.3% YoY, respectively, while LGT is likely to enjoy a 12.8% YoY increase. more

South Korea's ktf has launched a HSDPA wireless network in Seoul and cities across South Korea using wireless broadband technology from LG-Nortel, a joint venture of LG Electronics and Nortel. The new 3.5 G HSDPA, handset-based service is being launched with two handset models in the initial deployment - including the first HSDPA phone from LG Electronics, the LG-KH1000. A further four to five handsets are planned later in the year. more
