Iraqi Operator on Target to Double Subscriber Base in One Year
Iraqi mobile network operator, Asiacell says that it is on target to double its subscriber base within a 12 month period. The company had 3.6 million subscribers in February, and CEO Dr Diar Ahmad said in an interview that the customer base has now passed the six million mark. more

Orascom Sells Iraqi Subsidiary
Orascom has withdrawn from the Iraqi market and sold its Iraqna GSM network to Kuwait's Zain (formerly MTC) for US$1.2 billion. Iraqna is a subsidiary of Orascom Telecom Holding and Zain managed the purchase through its Iraqi subsidiary MTC-Atheer. more
Two Iraqi GSM Networks to Merge
After it decided not to renew its GSM operator license in Iraq, speculation has been high as to what the company would do with its existing network infrastructure in the country. The solution has just been announced, and the company is forming a joint venture with Korek Telecom; the incumbent Kurdish operator which won one of the three long term licenses in Iraq. Under the agreement, Orascom Telecom and Korek shall contribute the assets of Orascom's own Iraqi network, Iraqna and Korek respectively into the joint venture where Orascom Telecom shall hold an equity interest of 70% and Korek shall hold the remaining 30%. more

Iraq Q3 2006 Market Update - Mobile World Briefing
The market shares of Iraq's three main mobile licensees moved closer together again in Q3 2006. MTC Atheer, the smallest of the three players, grew its customer base by 17.2% in the three months to 30th September 2006 - well above the market average of 11.7%. Almost all of its 1.5pp gain in market share came from Orascom Telecom Iraq (Iraqna), which underperformed the market with growth of just 7.2%. Wataniya's Asia Cell posted an 11.3% increase in customer numbers, which, at just below the market average, saw it lose just 0.1pp of share during the period. more
