South Korea Opens up to Foreign Handset Vendors

South Korean Operators Fined by Regulator

South Korea's cellphone network operators have been fined US$75 million by the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) for exceeding legal guidelines for subsidising sales of handsets with new contracts. SK Telecom was fined US$46 million, with KTF being fined US$13 million and LG Telecom picking up a fine of US$16 million. more

South Korean networks fined

South Korea's telecoms regulator, the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) has fined all three cellular networks in the country for offering subsidies on their cell phone handsets. Handset subsidies were banned by the government last June following losses by the networks. SK Telecom received the largest fine of US$2,700 while KT Freetel was fined US$2,300 and LG Telecom was fined US$1,110. During the ten day investigation, the regulator found 4,256 incidents of handset subsidies at SK Telecom alone." more
