Idea Cellular to Upgrade Indian GPRS Capacity

MTS India Expands Coverage in Kerala State

Indian mobile network operator Sistema Shyam Teleservices, which operates under the MTS India brand, says that it has expanded the coverage of its mobile service to all the coastal districts of Kerala, with the launch of services in the Kozhikode district. This foray marks the presence of MTS in 262 towns of Kerala, in less than two months of operations in the state.  more

India's BSNL Planning 3G Launch Across 700 Cities

India's state-owned operator, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) intends to expand its 3G network to 700 cities across the North and East of the country by June. A second wave of launches in the South of the country will follow in July. Ericsson is BSNL's partner for 3G roll-out in over 400 of these cities.  more

India's Unitech Granted Radio Spectrum in Three More Circles

Claims of Cellphone Jamming During Tata Motors Factory Protests

Protesters outside the Tata Motors factory in India's West Bengal have accused the local phone companies of blocking the mobile phones. As some 30,000 protesters lined the streets around the factory to complain that the land was taken from local farmers, it was reported that many users were having to walk for a mile or more before being able to use their mobile phones.  more

Indian Operator Granted Additional CDMA Radio Spectrum

Russia's Sistema has announced that it's Indian subsidiary, Shyam Telelink has received radio frequencies under CDMA 800 MHz in four additional Indian circles. As a result, Shyam Telelink now has spectrum in 19 telecommunications circles.  more

Vodafone Planning Huge Indian Network Expansion

The newspaper reports that according to sources, Nokia Siemens Networks is likely to be the principal supplier of network electronics such as base tower stations (BTS), base station controllers (BSC) and transcoders in 12 out of Vodafone Essar's 16 existing circles. Motorola, in turn is slated to supply BTSs, BSCs and transcoders in the company's Delhi, Mumbai, kolkata and Punjab circles. As for mobile switching centres (MSC), Nokia Siemens will supply to almost all existing Vodafone Essar circles, with the exception of Mumbai metro circle where the MSCs will be supplied by Ericsson. more

Nokia Siemens Wins $900 Million Indian Contract

India's Bharti Airtel has signed a US$900 million network expansion contract across it's mobile and fixed networks with Nokia Siemens Networks. In the first multi platform network contract of its kind to be awarded in India, Nokia Siemens Networks will expand Airtel?s GSM network in eight circles; its National Long Distance and International Long Distance network with 1.8 million Next Generation Network (NGN) ports ? the largest ever NGN contract in the country ? and its International Calling Card prepaid service capacity by 4.5 million news users. more
