Israel Bans SMS Spam

Israel's Parliament, the knesset has approved a bill banning the sending of unsolicited SMSs to mobile phones with fines of up to NIS200,000 (US$61,000) per infraction. The bill also forbids unsolicited phone calls of a commercial nature - as well as email spam.  more

Israel lowers annual cellular license fees

The Israeli knesset Finance Committee has announced that it is lowering the annual royalty payments, but widening the range of services on which the payments are made by telecoms service providers, including the cellular phone networks. The current rate of 8% is to be lowered to 5% and will fall to 3.5% by 2004. The new regulation amends the prior payment arrangements of royalties, which had been established under the Telecommunications Law of 1982." more

Israeli teenagers use SMS to spark political incident

A group of Israeli teenagers sparked a political incident yesterday after sending text messages from their cell phones to friends, claiming that the knesset Speaker, Avraham Burg was seriously wounded in an assassination attempt. Their messages resulted in the police being sent to the Speaker's house to see if he was still alive. The General Security Service and the knesset's chief security officer are investigating the case, although the teenagers blame the media for enlarging the situation. The teenagers have apologized to the knesset Speaker and said they did not mean him any harm." more

Israel confirms 3G auction for next year

The Israeli communications ministry has confirmed that it intends to offer a series of 3G licenses in the first quarter of next year, using an auction to award the licenses. It is notable that not the entire planned 3G spectrum will be available until 2005, suggesting a staggered awards process over several years. However, the Israeli parliament, the knesset has insisted that the ministry let them study any proposals before they are enabled in order to ensure that customers are not penalised by high costs." more
