Japanese Networks Announce LTE Upgrade Plans
Japan's DoCoMo is reported to be planning an investment of ¥ 343 billion (US$3.4 billion) for the investment, while kddi and Softbank Mobile have budgeted ¥ 515 billion and ¥207.3 billion, respectively. According to the Nikkei newspaper, among the four, LTE services are forecast to attract around 36 million subscribers, with DoCoMo projecting 17.74 million LTE customers. more

DoCoMo 9-Month Profit Rises 16% to $4.8 billion
Japan's DoCoMo has reported that its net profit for the April-December period grew 16 percent to reach YEN 437.7 billion (US$4.8 billion) compared to a year earlier. Operating income rose 19 percent to YEN 746.8 billion (US$8.3 billion), while revenue fell 4 percent to YEN 3.38 trillion (US$37.7 billion). more

3G now Almost Four-Fifths of Japan's Subscriber Base
SoftbankÃ's run of market-leading performances for monthly net additions has reached an astounding 16 months, with August the fourth month in a row in which it was the only operator to record a six-figure gain. It did not quite match the level of dominance achieved in June and July, when it took more than half of the total net additions in the market, but the August share of 42.2% was nonetheless impressive. In real terms, SoftbankÃ's monthly gain was 163.6k, which took its total subscriber base to 19.49m. more

700 Million Mobile Phones to be NFC Enabled Within 5 Years
A new analysis of the NFC mobile payments opportunity forecasts that 700 million mobile subscribers globally will have phones equipped with NFC contactless technology by 2013. LTE Subscribers: From Zero to 32 Million in Three Years
Despite the fact that no LTE (Long Term Evolution) network is expected to be commercial before 2010, a new study from ABI Research forecasts that by 2013, there will be more than 32 million subscribers using LTE networks. Top 20 Operators in Asia-Pac: Bharti overtakes DoCoMo, India Gains Ground
The mobile markets of the Asia Pacific region continues to grow in importance. In Issue 99, we reported the fact that at the end of September, there were 20 networks in the world with more than 30m customers, of which eight were in this region. Those eight included the two largest - China Mobile and China Unicom - as well as the seventh, eighth, tenth, twelfth, 13th and 20th. Just three months later, there are now 23 networks that have passed the 30m mark and nine of these are now in the AsiaPac region, including four from India. Of the nine, four now have over 50m customers, the other two outside China being Bharti from India and DoCoMo from Japan. Together, the nine have a total of 831m customers, or just under 25% of the global market. more
