Japan January 2008 Market Update

Recently published figures from the Japanese telecoms regulator show that the trend established in the latter half of 2007 continued in the first month of 2008, with Softbank extending its run of market-leading performances to nine months. In fact, Softbank's January figure of 201k new connections represented 59.8% of the total net additions for Japan, the highest percentage it has ever claimed. kddi's combined au and Tu-Ka offerings added 83k while DoCoMo managed just 20k, lower even than startup 3G operator eMobile, which added 33k.  more

Japan's KDDI Oct-Dec Group Net Profit Up 26%

TOKYO -(Dow Jones)- kddi Corp. said Friday its group net profit for the October-December quarter rose 26% from a year earlier, as the company's mobile operations continued to grow, overcoming bigger losses in its fixed-line business.  more

Global W-CDMA base doubles as CDMA decline gathers pace

The dominance of the GSM family of technologies continued to increase in the year ended 30th September 2007 as a 25.9% increase in the number of 2G GSM customers was boosted by a 102.1% increase in the W-CDMA base. Overall the increase amounted to 28.8%, exceeding the global total of 24.2% and taking the proportion of the global customer base accounted for by the two technologies to 86.0% from 82.9% a year earlier.  more

DoCoMo Disolves WiMAX Joint Venture

In a brief statement this morning, Japan's NTT DoCoMo said that itself, ACCA Wireless and ACCA Networks have dissolved the strategic partnership that they established on August 31, 2007 for the purpose of securing a license to provide broadband wireless services based on mobile WiMAX technology.  more

NTT DoCoMo Jul-Sep Group Net Profit Drops 15%

TOKYO -(Dow Jones)- NTT DoCoMo Inc. said Friday its group net profit sagged 15% in the July-September quarter, dented by increased mobile handsets sales promotion costs and accounting changes.  more

Japanese market now dominated by 3G

Recently released information from the Telecommunications Carriers Association (TCA) of Japan indicates that the total number of mobile customers in Japan stood just short of 100 million at the end of September. The total figure of 99.3 million was equivalent to 5.9% annual growth, with 5.52 million new connections in the twelve months to the end of September. Quarterly net additions totalled 1.28 million, the lowest quarterly figure of this calendar year; this was mainly due to NTT DoCoMo's loss of 22.9k customers in August, a result which produced the lowest total for monthly net additions (324.5k) since October 2006.  more

Pantech Launches a "Bone-Conduction" mobile phone

South Korea based handset vendor, Pantech has launched a "Bone-Conduction" mobile phone in Japan on the kddi network. Bone conduction means a sound wave is conducted through people's skull by vibration and further to inner ear to let people hear. The Pantech-au A1407PT phone has a bone-conduction speaker attached on the front of handset - which users hold to their head to "hear" the conversation.  more

DoCoMo Q2 Net Profit Drops by 25%

TOKYO -(Dow Jones)- NTT DoCoMo said Friday its group net profit for the April-June quarter fell 25%, squeezed by an accounting change, increased expenses for selling handsets and the cost of expanding its mobile telephone network. more
