KDDI Quarterly Profits Drop 25%
Japanese mobile network operator, kddi Corp has reported a 25% drop in its fiscal second quarter results. The quarterly net profit was Y58.87 billion (US$640 million), down from Y78.66 billion in the same period a year ago. Revenues dropped by 0.9% to Y869.36 billion (US$9.45 billion). more

Hitachi Opens USA Based LTE Research Facility
Hitachi says that it has opened a LTE research facility in Dallas, USA though a local subsidiary company, Hitachi Communication Technologies America. The facility is located in the "telecom corridor" area of Richardson, Texas. The Dallas R&D Center will focus on the Mobility Management Entity (MME) and other components of the Evolved Packet Core (EPC) for LTE. more

KDDI Awards LTE Contracts to Motorola and NEC

Japanese Networks Announce LTE Upgrade Plans
Japan's DoCoMo is reported to be planning an investment of ¥ 343 billion (US$3.4 billion) for the investment, while kddi and Softbank Mobile have budgeted ¥ 515 billion and ¥207.3 billion, respectively. According to the Nikkei newspaper, among the four, LTE services are forecast to attract around 36 million subscribers, with DoCoMo projecting 17.74 million LTE customers. more

DoCoMo 9-Month Profit Rises 16% to $4.8 billion
Japan's DoCoMo has reported that its net profit for the April-December period grew 16 percent to reach YEN 437.7 billion (US$4.8 billion) compared to a year earlier. Operating income rose 19 percent to YEN 746.8 billion (US$8.3 billion), while revenue fell 4 percent to YEN 3.38 trillion (US$37.7 billion). more
