Indian Operators Get Warning Over Coverage Breaches
India's Department of Telecom (DoT) has issued warnings to several operators who are reported to be breaching restrictions on providing cellular coverage too close to India's international borders. The four operators, Bharti Airtel, Hutch, Reliance and BSNL have been found to have coverage along the 'no service zones' which extend 500 meters along the border. more

India's GSM network operator, Airtel (Bharti Televentures) has installed the country's highest elevation base station, at a height of 3,350 meters above sea level - at Qutak Gompa in the Leh district of Northern India. The company currently has four base stations in the area, and plans to scale that up to eight towers in the near future. This should enable GSM coverage for about 80% of the population in the area, including military installations - the district is inside the contested kashmir state. more

Bharti gains national network license capacity
India's Bharti Tele-Ventures (BTVL) has signed and received Unified Access license to provide GSM services in 5 circles including Uttar Pradesh (East), West Bengal & Andaman Nicobar, Orissa, Bihar and Jammu & kashmir. The license has been granted to Bharti Cellular Limited (BCL), the cellular arm and subsidiary of BTVL. more
