Roshan Expands Afghanistan's Telemedicine Project to Bamyan Province

Afghanistan mobile network, Roshan has expanded its Telemedicine solution beyond kabul to include provincial hospitals. Afghan Wireless Completes 2,500km Microwave Ring for GSM Backhaul

Afghanistan's Afghan Wireless has announced the completion of its high capacity digital Microwave Ring around the country. This is the first Microwave Ring across the country in the history of Afghanistan covering a distance of 2,500 Kilometers and millions of dollars of investment. It passes through 18 provinces providing direct coverage and connectivity to the population residing in surrounding areas.

Taliban Threaten Afghan Mobile Phone Network

Afghanistan's Taliban are reported to be threatening to target the base station towers operated by Roshan Telecommunications, claiming that the company is collaborating with US and Afghan authorities. The Taliban have given the operator 20 days to end its "collaboration" otherwise they will start attacking the towers. They claim that Roshan is providing their phone numbers to the US coalition and blocking its mobile phones. more

3G Coming to Afghanistan

Siemens has been awarded a contract to set up a W-CDMA network in kabul for Afghan Wireless Communication Company (AWCC). In addition to 3G technology, Siemens will also supply 2G equipment to the mobile operator in Afghanistan. more

Afghanistan's Afghan Wireless has completed installation of a new 100,000-line Siemens mobile switch, which will significantly upgrade network capabilities as well as add capacity to Afghanistan's capital city network. The switch is currently being tested and is expected to be ready for commercial launch in the next few weeks. more

Afghanistan GSM license extended

Afghan Wireless has been formally awarded a national GSM Mobile Wireless Service License by the Ministry of Communications of the Transitional Islamic Government of Afghanistan. The license will be signed by officials from the Ministry and Afghan Wireless in a ceremony on July 10 at the Ministry Offices in downtown kabulmore

Afghanistan's third GSM network starts trials

An international consortium lead by the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development has begun testing its GSM network in kabul, Afghanistan. This is the country's second commercial GSM network, although a third license award has been claimed by Ariana Telecom which has yet to start building an infrastructure. There is also a GSM network in kabul operated by Ericsson for the UN forces in the city. Telecom Development Company Afghanistan (TDCA), is owned by a consortium in which the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development holds 51%, Monaco Telecom International 35% and MCT Corp. 9%. France's Alcatel holds 5% and is providing vendor loan financing of US$55 million for the network equipment. more
