Mobile Phones to Warn of Rampaging Elephants
The forestry department of India's jharkhand State has started handing out free mobile phones to villages to warn them of rampaging elephants. The mobile phone distribution schemes was launched early this month and over 100 phones have been handed out so far. In total, some 600 villages will be given a handset by the project. more

India's BSNL Planning 3G Launch Across 700 Cities
India's state-owned operator, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) intends to expand its 3G network to 700 cities across the North and East of the country by June. A second wave of launches in the South of the country will follow in July. Ericsson is BSNL's partner for 3G roll-out in over 400 of these cities. more

Free Phones Given to Indian Villages to Fight Naxalite Terrorists
Villagers in the north-eastern Indian province of jharkhand are being given free mobile phones so that they can call for assistance if Maoist terrorists are in their vicinities. Private Equity Group Invests in Indian Mobile Operator
The private equity group, Providence Equity Partners has taken a twenty percent stake in Aditya Birla Telecom (ABTL) - a wholly-owned subsidiary of India's Idea Cellular - for US$640 million. ABTL owns the telecom mobile license for the Bihar service area and will hold a 16 per cent stake in Indus Towers, the company's tower subsidiary which is co-owned by Vodafone Essar and Bharti Airtel. more

Maoist terrorists in parts of India have issued warnings to villages to stop using cellphones, reports The Hindu newspaper. There did not seem to be any specific reason for their ban on cell phones, other than possibly the ongoing terrorising of the countryside. more
