Number Portability Dispute in the UKs Channel Islands
Jersey Telecom Group, which owns Wave Telecom, is calling for the UK's Channel Islands to work together on Mobile Number Portability (MNP). Guernsey's regulator, the Office of Utility Regulation (OUR), is scheduled to launch a detailed consultation on MNP to analyse its potential impact and explore the most effective way to introduce it to the Guernsey market. more

Jersey Bans 18-Month Phone Contracts
Jersey Telecom says that it has decided to withdraw its 18-month mobile contracts following pressure from the telecoms regulator. The 18-month deals were introduced by JT in April and gave customers cheaper, or in some cases free, facility-rich handsets in return for a longer period of guaranteed service with the company. 18-month contracts are offered in the rest of the UK and are also available to customers in Guernsey. more

Island Operator Passes Subscriber Milestone
The Guernsey (Channel Islands, UK) based new entrant, Wave Telecom says that it recently signed up its 10,000th mobile customer. A wholly owned subsidiary of the Jersey Telecom Group, Wave Telecom Limited was granted licences by the Office of Utility Regulation to operate fixed telecommunication services from November 2002 and mobile telecommunications services from March 2003 to, from and within the Bailiwick of Guernsey. more

Customers of Jersey Telecom will be amongst the first mobile phone users to benefit from an SMS Routing technology from Telsis that enables SMS messages to be delivered immediately to their destinations. Traditional SMS networks use a store-and-forward architecture, in which messages are held at an SMSC (Short Message Service Centre) before delivery. Nowadays, handsets are almost always switched on and available to receive messages, so the need for storage is greatly reduced. more

Channel Islands GSM improvements
The consultancy firm, Omnitele says that it has been assisting the Channel Island (UK) based Jersey Telecom to increase their GSM network quality inland and to further expand their mobile network coverage to other Channel Islands. Jersey Telecom is a fixed network and mobile operator with headquarters on Jersey Island. On the mobile network, GPRS service was successfully launched last summer and the data service usage, among Jersey Telecom subscriber base, is likely to increase further as MMS will be commercially launched in a few months. more

Donated mobile phones fund charities
Old mobile phones, collected in Jersey, have raised more than US$3,000 for charity. 1,000 handsets have been donated to the Bring Bring Appeal, supported by Jersey Telecom, which encourages Islanders to recycle their old mobile phones and accessories to raise money for Oxfam. Jersey Telecom says that it passes the old mobile phones handed in to Oxfam, who sell or dispose of them through ISIS Telecommunications. If ISIS can't sell on the handsets, they recycle them in accordance with The Environmental Protection Act 1990. more

Alcatel has won a contract with Wave Telecom, a wholly owned subsidiary of Jersey Telecom, to supply a GSM/GPRS and 3G/UMTS mobile network in the island of Guernsey, one of the Channel Islands. Following the successful rollout by Alcatel of a GSM/GPRS mobile network and services platform in Jersey, Jersey Telecom Group has now selected Alcatel technology for its first 3G/UMTS network. Wave Telecom will launch 3G/UMTS services in Guernsey by April 2004 while GSM/GPRS services will be available in November 2003.Launched in December 2002, Wave Telecom is the only mobile operator to apply for and receive a 3G licence from Guernsey's Office of Utility Regulation. Wave Telecom's licence also covers the provision of GSM/GPRS and 3G/UMTS services for the surrounding Channel Islands of Alderney and Sark.Under the terms of this contract, Alcatel will supply and install a complete and integrated set of GSM/GPRS and UMTS features and network configurations. The Alcatel's Evolium solution features the GSM/GPRS and the UTRAN (UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network) radio systems, the mobile circuit and packet switch core network systems, as well as the Radio Network Controllers (RNC) and a Home Location Register (HLR). Furthermore, Alcatel will implement its LMDS solution to provide broadband wireless transport of mobile data and voice traffic, instead of expensive leased lines within Guernsey with mircrowave being used as transport technology between the islands of Jersey and Guernsey. Alcatel's LMDS is a flexible, fast and cost-effective mobile backhaul solution.Charles Matthews, CEO, Alcatel UK said: "We are proud to have helped Wave Telecom realise its vision of a 2G, 2.5G and 3G network.
