Sun and Samsung Repoted Developing Java Based Smartphone
Sun Microsystems and Samsung Electronics are reported to be jointly developing a mobile phone which they hope will challenge the Apple iPhone. The local JoongAng Ilbo newspaper reported that Sun Chairman Scott McNealy had said that the companies were working on a "java phone" that would cost less than the Apple's iPhone, but would surpass it in functionality. more

Sun Microsystems Buys Mobile OS Developer
Sun Microsystems has announced that it is to buy up all of SavaJe Technologies intellectual property assets. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. SavaJe (pronounced savage) is the developer of the SavaJe OS, a java OS for mobile phones. Based on Sun Microsystems' Micro Edition, their phones offer a Swing-based development platform for creating handset platforms which could be customised by operators, or other 3rd party distributors. more

Chinese WAP Usage Declines - report
China's overall mobile VAS market maintained a good growth momentum in Q3 2005 to reach US$600 million, nevertheless, WAP service declined substantially due to the recent consolidation move taken by China telecom operators, according to a report from Analysys International. According to Analysys International's research, affected by the operators' campaigns to eliminate sleeping users and enhance market regulation, China's WAP service in Q3 2005 had declined 18.3% compared with last quarter with revenue at RUS$154 million, which is almost the same as the size in Q1 2005. more
