Reference Design for Linux Mobile Phones Released
The Linux mobile phone group, the LiMo Foundation has announced the on-schedule availability of LiMo Platform Release 1. The LiMo Platform - leveraging standards and open-source projects - is a modular, plug-in, hardware-independent architecture built around an open operating system, with a secure run-time environment for support of downloaded applications. All of the enabling technology within Release 1 - created by the foundationÃ's Founder members - has now been commercially deployed and proven within multiple handsets enjoyed by consumers today, as well as in several reference and pilot devices that will be on the market later this year. more

Automated Java to BREW Porting Software for Mobile Applications
Mobile software developer, Innaworks has launched an updated version of its automated java-to-BREW conversion platform, alcheMo. The company says that alcheMo for BREW version 2.1 introduces support for the HTTP/HTTPS and File Connection APIs (JSR-75). In addition, alcheMo for BREW version 2.1 includes pre-production support for sockets and TCP, Location Based Services (JSR-179) and Personal Information Services (JSR-75). more

Nokia Siemens Wins Indonesian GSM Expansion Contract
Nokia Siemens Networks has signed a contract with Hutchison Telecom Indonesia (HCPT) to strengthen HCPT's GSM/WCDMA network coverage in the islands of java and Sumatra, and roll out GSM core networks in Kalimantan and Sulawesi. This contract supplements HCPT's first network contract with Siemens Indonesia in 2005. more

Hutchison Reports Record 2007 Profits on Disposals
Hutchison Telecom has reported a record annual profit of HK$67,776 million (US$8.7 billion) for last year, thanks largely to disposals. Turnover increased by 13.8% to HK$20,401 million (US$2.63 billion) reflecting a 57% growth in the customer base to nearly 10 million, increased usage especially in 3G and favourable foreign currency exchange rates. EBITDA increased to HK$5,253 million despite losses at start up operations in Indonesia and Vietnam, and HK$223 million non-cash charge for employee stock options, representing an EBITDA margin of 25.7%. Excluding the start up operations the EBITDA margin would have been 29.4%. more

ARM Software to Offer Console-Quality 3D Gaming on Mobile Phones
Chip manufacturer, ARM has announced the Mali-JSR297 software for 3D graphics, the first product to enable developers of java applications for mobile phones to take advantage of the latest hardware graphics features found in OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics processing units (GPUs). Huawei Completes Indonesian CDMA Rollout
Huawei has announced that it has completed a CDMA2000 network rollout in Indonesia on behalf of PT Telekomunikasi (Telkom) ahead of schedule. Currently Huawei deploys over half of Telkom's national network which covers the areas of Jakarta, West java, Center java and Sumatera. more

Adobe Flash Lite Gaining Momentum in Worldwide Handsets
A report from Strategy Analytics is forecasting that annual Adobe Flash Lite-enabled cellphone shipments to grow to around 840 million units in 2012 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 31.6 percent from 2007 to 2012. Flash Lite penetration in cellphones grew from 11.2 percent in 2006 to 19.0 percent in 2007 and is expected to grow to 61.9 percent by 2012. more

Google's Android Platform Shown Working on a HTC Smartphone

Opera to Port their Mobile Web Browser to BREW Handsets
India's Tata Teleservices has secured an agreement with the Norway based, Opera Software to port their java based mobile web browser onto Brew-enabled handsets which will be supplied by Huawei. The new browser will also be multi-lingual to support the various local languages in India. more
