Multimedia to the mobile phone is one of the hottest and youngest market segments in the wireless arena. Attempts to bring uniformity to it with open digital rights management standards are premature at this stage, according to a new study released by ABI Research. The Open Mobile Alliance (OMA), an industry group counting mobile operators, IT companies, wireless vendors and content providers as members, developed an open DRM standard for multimedia content distribution to mobileplatforms. Separate from OMA, MPEG LA is the organization that administerslicensing for certain DRM-related intellectual property used in thespecification. more

The market for full track music downloads to mobile phones was twenty times larger at the end of 2005 than it was twelve months earlier, a new study from ABI Research has revealed. It found that global revenues from over-the-air (OTA) downloaded full track songs last year were US$251 million, up from US$12.4 million in 2004. ABI Research forecasts that by 2011 this figure will be US$9.3 billion. more
