Shipments of Cell Phones Return to Growth in Q2

Global shipments of cell phones in the second quarter climbed 4.7 percent compared to the first, marking the first sequential increase for the market since the third quarter of 2008, according to isuppli Corp. Worldwide shipments amounted to 265 million units in the second quarter, up from 253 million in the first.  more

Smart Phones Ring in Healthy Growth in 2009 Despite Mobile Meltdown

Although the outlook for the overall mobile handset market continues to dim, smart phones remain a bright spot with global unit growth as high as 11.1 percent in 2009, isuppli is predicting. isuppli's optimistic forecast for global smart phone unit shipments calls for 192.3 million units in 2009, up 11.1 percent from 173.6 million in 2008. A more pessimistic outlook calls for growth of only 6 percent this year, reaching 183.9 million units.  more

Qualcomm Warns of Slowing Handset Replacement Cycle

Qualcomm CEO, Paul Jacobs says that there are signs that mobile phone owners are delaying plans to replace their existing handsets - slowing the replacement cycle. Speaking in an interview on CNBC television, he said that the trend has been most noticeable in Japan and South Korea. However, sales of smartphones appeared to be remaining strong.  more

A collection of manufacturers have announced the formation of a working group committed to creating an open standard for next-generation memory interface technology targeting mobile phones. This memory standard for dynamic random access memory (DRAM), named Serial Port Memory Technology (SPMT) should significantly reduced pin count, lower power demand and multiple ports by using a serial interface instead of the parallel interface commonly used in today's memory devices.  more

Motorola Mobile-Handset Struggles Benefit Rivals

Motorola's poor second-quarter performance in the global mobile handset market helped boost the results of its competitors, most notably Samsung Electronics, according to a preliminary ranking from isuppli. In the second quarter, Motorola of the United States shipped 35.5 million mobile handsets, a 21.8 percent decline from 45.4 million in the first quarter of 2007. Company market share plunged to 13.3 percent, down 4.6 points from 17.9 percent in the first quarter. more
