Improving GSM Voice Call Quality

Ericsson and T-Mobile International say that they have successfully trialed AMR-Wideband among consumers in Germany, proving the potential of this technology thanks to a significant improvement in voice quality and the consequent end-user satisfaction. This was the first AMR (Adaptive Multi Rate) Wideband trial in a commercial network and consumer response was researched by the Ericsson Consumer & Enterprise Lab together with the German market research company GfK. more

Cellphone Bugging Rises

Germany's Federal Network Agency has published the number of authorised phone bugging requests carried out under the Code of Criminal Procedure. According to these statistics German courts last year ordered 35,015 intercepts of telecommunications as well as ordering the renewal of 7,943. These orders affected 34,855 mobile phone numbers and 5,398 fixed line numbers (analogue and isdn).

Philips Licenses HSDPA Platform for OEM Handsets

InterDigital has signed an agreement with the semiconductor division of Royal Philips Electronics to bring InterDigital's HSDPA technology into the family of Nexperia cellular system solutions. InterDigital offers its standards-compliant HSDPA solution as a set of technology blocks for incorporation into existing UMTS Release 99/Release 4 chips or as a separate coprocessor chip for initial deployment. The advanced receiver-based technology solution supports Category 10 functionality, efficient power control and delivers quality of service enhancements and is scalable to Release 6 of the standard, High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) technology. more
