Iran Looking to Sell Large Stake in State Owned Telco
The Iranian government has announced plans to sell off a second stake in the state owned telecoms operator, the Telecommunication Company of Iran (TCI). The government recently floated a five percent stake on the local stock market and had been expected to seek an external investor. Ali Rahmani, managing director of the Tehran Stock Exchange has now confirmed that a 49% stake will be sold to a single investor, with a foreign party being invited to take up to 35% of the company. more

Turkey's Turkcell says that it has started international arbitration procedures over difficulties it experienced in launching a new network in Iran. According to the statement released to the Istanbul Stock Exchange, Turkcell said that it had incurred significant loses on its investments after Iran granted a license to a consortium led by Turkcell in February 2004 to operate a GSM network in the country. more

Who are the Top 10 Operators in Africa and Mid-East
Once again, the components of the list of the ten largest companies in the Middle East and Africa region are unchanged quarter on quarter, but, as before, there are several positional changes. Vodacom in South Africa is still by far the largest business in the region, with 23.9m customers and it is difficult to imagine its position being threatened at any time in the near future. The only other likely contenders for the top spot are Nigerian - given the three to one difference in population between the two countries - but with five competitors there, rather than just three, the threat could take some time to materialise. As it is, Nigerian companies take fifth and sixth place on the list and even these two taken together still don't quite match Vodacom's total. more

MTN Passes 40 Million Subscribers
The South Africa based, MTN Group has reported a 73% increase in subscribers to 40 million for 2006. The Group's revenue increased by 49% to R52 (US$7.13) billion when compared to the prior 12-month period to 31 December 2005. The revenue increase was driven mainly by the acquisition of Investcom and increased subscriber numbers. Excluding the R6 billion (US$822 million) revenue impact from Investcom, the year-on-year growth in Group revenue would have been 32%. more
