Iran Cancels 3rd Mobile License - to Hold New Tender

The Iranian government has reportedly stripped Zain of its mobile license in the country, although there seems to be some confusion about whether the company ever had the license in the first place. The local Poul newspaper quoted Iranian Telecommunication Minister Mohammad Soleimani as saying that another tender would be held to find a new partner for the development of the much-delayed project. The report gave no further details.  more

Iran Looking to Sell Large Stake in State Owned Telco

The Iranian government has announced plans to sell off a second stake in the state owned telecoms operator, the Telecommunication Company of Iran (TCI). The government recently floated a five percent stake on the local stock market and had been expected to seek an external investor. Ali Rahmani, managing director of the Tehran Stock Exchange has now confirmed that a 49% stake will be sold to a single investor, with a foreign party being invited to take up to 35% of the company.  more

Iran to Announce 3rd GSM License Tender Within Days

Iran is expected to announce a tender for a third GSM license in the country within the next few days, but may be required to offer generous terms to encourage investors into the country. The political interference in the tender for the second mobile license is still causing legal problems at the International Court for Arbitration.  more

Iran to Sell 25% Stake in National Operator

The Iranian government is planning to sell off up to a quarter of the state owned telecoms operator, Telecommunications Company of Iran (TCI). The government will launch a standard floatation on the Tehran stock exchange for five percent next week and then seek an investor to take a twenty percent block in the company at a later date.  more

Turkcell threatens to withdraw from Iranian GSM venture

Turkeys Turkcell has issued an update on the approval process of its GSM license agreement in Iran. As announced on September 23, 2004, the GSM license agreement has been signed between irancell, the company that will carry out the GSM operations in Iran, and the Iranian government, which is 51% owned by Turkcell. However, they had also announced that irancell would not become a licensed GSM operator until the license fee of US$391 million is paid. more
