The Fastest Growing Mobile Operators in Africa/Mid-East
The chart shows the fastest growing businesses in the MEA region over a twelve month view. The list includes nine of the names that feature in the Q1 08 list, with Zain Iraq coming in at Algerie Telecom MobileÃ's expense. The top two places are the same in the year as they are in the quarter, with TCIÃ's 9.12m just shading IrancellÃ's 7.95m. The other really strong performances in the region were spread across five main markets - with Mobily in Saudi Arabia taking third place ahead of two Egyptian companies, three from Nigeria and one each from Iraq and Kenya. more

Celtel Zambia Listed on Local Stock Exchange
Celtel Zambia has been listed on the Lusaka Stock Exchange in an ipo which valued the company at nearly US$1.2 billion after the shares jumped by 13% in early trading. Celtel is only the 19th company to be listed on the local stock exchange. more

Safaricom Shares Surge As Trading Starts in Nairobi
Shares in the massively oversubscribed Safaricom floatation soared when trading opened this morning on the Nairobi Stock Exchange. Share were sold to domestic investors at 5 shillings each (with 5.5 shillings for overseas investors) and jumped by 45 percent to reach 7.4 shillings by lunchtime - having at one point reached 8 shillings during the mornings trade. more

Vodafone to Pay $2.1 Billion for Mobile License in Qatar
ictQATAR, Qatar's telecommunications regulator has announced that the Vodafone/Qatar Foundation Consortium will pay a fee of QAR 7.716 billion (US$2.12 billion) for the country's second mobile license. Vodafone and partner Qatar Foundation Consortium won Qatar's second mobile license, beating AT&T and Verizon Communications in December last year - although the final payment details were not announced at the time. more
