SprintPCS facing lawsuit over affiliate bankruptcy
The Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors of ipcs Inc. has asked the Court overseeing the ipcs bankruptcy case for permission to sue Sprint for causing ipcs's failure to satisfy its current debts and future obligations to its creditors. ipcs owes more than US$430 million to its bondholders, banks and trade creditors. more

SprintPCS affiliate files for bankruptcy
The SprintPCS affiliate, AirGate PCS has announced that its wholly-owned unrestricted subsidiary, ipcs, and subsidiaries have filed a Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Georgia. As an unrestricted subsidiary, ipcs is a separate corporate entity from AirGate with its own independent financing sources, debt obligations and sources of revenue. The Company believes AirGate operations will continue independent of the outcome of the ipcs bankruptcy. However, it is likely that AirGate's ownership interest in ipcs will have no value after the restructuring is complete. more

AirGate to become SprintPCS's largest affiliate
AirGate PCS has agreed to buy the privately held ipcs Inc. for around US$771 million in stock. This will make it SprintPCS's largest private affiliate by coverage, and will have 300,000 customers, mainly in secondary Southeast and Midwest markets, which have a potential market of 11 million subscribers. AirGate will also assume approximately US$97 million in ipcs debt, and SprintPCS must also approve the merger. Sprint does not have and investment stake in AirGate, but under a reselling agreement, it provides the company with wireless spectrum and the ability to market its services under the Sprint brand. There are 18 independent affiliates marketing the SprintPCS service. ipcs had planned an IPO last year, but cancelled that after the telecoms stock crash and has been for sale since early this year." more
