Survey finds smartphones transforming mobile lifestyles of college students

Once reserved for busy business executives, smartphones are now being incorporated into the mobile lifestyle of college students, says new research from Ball State University. A recent survey of about 300 college students found that 27 percent own a smartphone as compared to the national average of 19 percent for working adults.  more

Three-Quarters of All Electronic Messages are Sent Via Mobile Phones

A survey has found that 74% of all messages globally are now sent through a mobile device, report TNS. This is a huge increase on 12 months ago where this figure was only 59%. This trend is even higher in emerging markets where nine out ten messages now go out via mobiles.  more

Gemalto to Embed Windows Live Messenger in SIM Cards

Microsoft and smart-card vendor, Gemalto have announced they are collaborating to offer Windows Live Messenger services to the mass market of mobile subscribers through a new Windows Live Messenger client application that comes pre-installed on phone Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards. The Gemalto application, named SIMessenger, is the world's first Microsoft-certified instant messaging SIM client solution.  more

Rich Communication Suite Initiative Gains Momentum

The GSMA has reported significant progress in the Rich Communication Suite (RCS) Initiative, a service providing enriched communication capabilities such as in-call multimedia sharing, conversational messaging and presence-enhanced contact management, all accessible through a user's mobile phone contact list. The initiative has generated considerable momentum across a number of fronts since the GSMA brought RCS into its work programme in September 2008, including the delivery of the RCS Release 1 specification, the addition of new programme participants and the successful completion of interoperability tests.  more

Gemalto Offering SIM-Based Windows Live Mobile IM to Argentineans

Gemalto has announced the successful implementation of Microsoft's Instant Messenger service built into its SIM cards, and will be available for the Argentinean marketplace through Personal's new SIM cards in the coming weeks.  more
