'Sleep talking' PCs save energy and money
Personal computers may soon save large amounts of energy by "sleep talking." Computer scientists at UC San Diego and Microsoft Research have created a plug-and-play hardware prototype for personal computers that induces a new energy saving state known as "sleep talking." Normally PCs can be in either awake mode - where they consume power even if they are not being used, or in a low power sleep mode - where they save substantial power but are essentially inactive and unresponsive to network traffic. The new sleep talking state provides much of the energy savings of sleep mode and some of the network-and-Internet-connected convenience of awake mode. more

VoIP provider Skype has confirmed speculation and announced that it has launched a Skype application for the Apple iPhone, which will be available on the Apple App Store from today. The app also adds Skype calling and instant messaging to any second generation iPod touch with a compatible headset and microphone. more

Rich Communication Suite Initiative Gains Momentum
The GSMA has reported significant progress in the Rich Communication Suite (RCS) Initiative, a service providing enriched communication capabilities such as in-call multimedia sharing, conversational messaging and presence-enhanced contact management, all accessible through a user's mobile phone contact list. The initiative has generated considerable momentum across a number of fronts since the GSMA brought RCS into its work programme in September 2008, including the delivery of the RCS Release 1 specification, the addition of new programme participants and the successful completion of interoperability tests. more

Acision has announced that Russian mobile operator, MTS is using its Instant Messaging solution to offer an enhanced messaging experience to its subscribers. Combining the Acision Person to Person Gateway with core elements from Colibria's product portfolio - including the Instant Messaging and Presence Service (IMPS) - Acision's Instant Messaging solution provided integration between mobile instant messaging and SMS. more
