Survey finds smartphones transforming mobile lifestyles of college students

Once reserved for busy business executives, smartphones are now being incorporated into the mobile lifestyle of college students, says new research from Ball State University. A recent survey of about 300 college students found that 27 percent own a smartphone as compared to the national average of 19 percent for working adults.  more

Rich Communication Suite Initiative Gains Momentum

The GSMA has reported significant progress in the Rich Communication Suite (RCS) Initiative, a service providing enriched communication capabilities such as in-call multimedia sharing, conversational messaging and presence-enhanced contact management, all accessible through a user's mobile phone contact list. The initiative has generated considerable momentum across a number of fronts since the GSMA brought RCS into its work programme in September 2008, including the delivery of the RCS Release 1 specification, the addition of new programme participants and the successful completion of interoperability tests.  more

Smith Micro Software says that it has partnered with NeuStar, a provider of clearinghouse and directory services to introduce a SIP/MSRP-compliant, IMS-based Instant Messaging Client Server solution. Fully tested within NeuStar's development interoperability program, Smith Micro's client supports enhanced Instant Multimedia Messaging and end-to-end presence functionality for popular Windows Mobile and Symbian devices.  more

Mobile Based Instant Messaging Popularity Surges

According to the second annual AP-AOL Instant Messaging Trends Survey, many IM users are spending time instant messaging from their cell phones. The survey, which examined instant messaging trends and usage habits among 1,246 IM users, revealed that 25 percent of respondents send IMs from their cell phones, including one in three (32 percent) teens.  more
