Mobile Internet, multimedia and mapping capture 40% of smartphone face time

Hannu Verkasalo, who has the public examination of his doctoral dissertation at Helsinki University of Technology on April 17th, says that "the usage of new smartphone applications, including the mobile Internet, games, multimedia and map applications, has been increasing among smartphone users and reaches already 40% of total face time". However, most of the usage is still based on voice and text messaging.  more

Lack of Education Restricts Growth of Mobile Instant Messaging

Research released today by instant messaging vendor, ProcessOne, has revealed that 60% of mobile users would send less text messages if they were better educated about how to use mobile instant messaging (IM) services. Despite many more of today's mobile handsets having IM capability only 35% of the users surveyed currently used mobile IM with text messaging remaining the dominant communications medium.  more

Acision Syncs SMS with Instant Messaging

Acision has announced that Russian mobile operator, MTS is using its Instant Messaging solution to offer an enhanced messaging experience to its subscribers. Combining the Acision Person to Person Gateway with core elements from Colibria's product portfolio - including the Instant Messaging and Presence Service (IMPS) - Acision's Instant Messaging solution provided integration between mobile instant messaging and SMS.  more

Customers Disuaded from Mobile Data Services by Fussy Handset Configuration

Complexity is preventing uptake and usage of mobile applications and services, according to a survey of US and UK consumers commissioned by mobile device management (MDM) vendor, Mformation. 95% of consumers surveyed indicated that they would be more likely to try new mobile services if setup was easier. Complex setup issues are also preventing 45% of people from upgrading to new, more sophisticated mobile phones. Moreover, 61% of these mobile users say phone setup is as frustrating as changing a bank account.  more
