Passenger In-Flight Mobile Use Exceeds 40% on Malaysia Airlines
Passengers on Malaysia Airlines are proving some of the world's most enthusiastic users of in-flight mobiles as they embrace the AeroMobile service. On some flights, passenger adoption has exceeded 40%. Data devices such as Blackberry are proving popular, with data traffic on some flights exceeding 2MB, the equivalent of 40 Blackberry users sending and receiving email. more

Emirates Allowing Cellphone Use in Flight
The airline, Emirates has signed a deal with AeroMobile to offer in-flight mobile phone coverage. AeroMobile, has developed an aircraft system which controls the power output of all mobile phones down to the minimum level allowing their safe use onboard aircraft. The Dubai-based airline expects to launch the service on board one of its Boeing 777s as early as January 2007, once all necessary approvals have been granted. more

In-Flight Mobile Phones May Not be Economically Viable
A new report from TMF Associates forecasts that widespread deployment of in-flight cellular services could be limited to those airlines who can justify investment in passenger connectivity as a service differentiator, since many airlines may be unable to demonstrate a compelling direct return on investment in these services. more

A new service has been a launched that will enable airline passengers to send SMS's from their plane seat. Now commercially available and enabled on both MAS and MORS/Rockwell-Collins IFE systems, SITA's Aircom SMS service is generating interest from airlines worldwide wanting to offer their passengers the option to send and receive SMS text messages while in flight. SITA is currently working with several airlines to introduce the two-way SMS/email by the end of 2003 and hopes to soon announce the launch customer. more
