The two companies have chosen a high-performance, ruggedized communications server from VT Miltope as the on-board hub for passenger communications when they launch their AeroMobile service this year. more

ARINC Inc. and Telenor have finalized a major element of their GSM Mobile Connectivity solution for the use of cell phones on commercial airlines. A new service has been a launched that will enable airline passengers to send SMS's from their plane seat. Now commercially available and enabled on both MAS and MORS/Rockwell-Collins IFE systems, SITA's Aircom SMS service is generating interest from airlines worldwide wanting to offer their passengers the option to send and receive SMS text messages while in flight. SITA is currently working with several airlines to introduce the two-way SMS/email by the end of 2003 and hopes to soon announce the launch customer. more

Inmarsat to get SMS capability
Antepo is to deploy a mobile messaging solution over inmarsat's satellite networks, enabling inmarsat's users to send SMS-based instant messages over IP connections. Antepo is providing its Advanced Converging Communications and Enhanced Presence for the Telecom (ACCEPT) system, which enables access across GSM, GPRS and now satellite networks. more

Aircraft to get high speed data services
The satellite network, inmarsat has announced a service that will provide passengers in the corporate jet market with data connections of 64kbits/s. Later this year this will be expanded to include a Mobile Packet Data service based on IP-protocol, and by the end of the year will be available to the commercial airline market. inmarsat announced that Telenor Satellite Services of Norway and USA, have been authorised in all four ocean regions for Swift64 services. Initially the Swift64 compatible avionics are being provided by Honeywell/Thales, with other manufacturers expected shortly. more
