Handset Shipments Expected to Drop 20% in 2009

Although cellphone shipments and subscription numbers have held up relatively well during the global recession thus far, the outlook is more tumultuous for the mobile industry, reports in-stat. Mobile TV in China Ready to Take Off

Still in their infancy, mobile TV services in China are ready to take flight, reports in-stat. Mobile TV subscribers in China will grow to 94 million by 2009, the high-tech market research firm forecasts, with 2007 being the year that the services gather significant momentum. "Telecom operators in China have developed a clear business model for streaming mobile video services over a 2.5G or 3G network," said Anty Zheng, in-stat analyst. "But unclear regulations need to be straightened out so responsibilities and value chain positioning can be settled; otherwise, market development will be inhibited." more

Early adopters not interested in mp3 playing cellphones

The cellular phone industry's hype machine has been in high gear over innovative music- and TV-centric devices and services, but a new in-stat report shows that some early adopters are lukewarm about them. Fewer than 9% of respondents to an in-stat early adopter consumer survey were very or extremely interested in buying a cell phone capable of playing MP3 or other music files, and less than 11% were very or extremely interested in broadcast TV functionality, the high-tech research firm says. more
