Femtocell Group Signs Up 100th Member

The Femto Forum, the independent industry and operator association that supports femtocell deployment, has announced that is has reached 100 members. The body now boasts as members, all of the top 5 infrastructure vendors and 17 of the world's top 20 operators covering more than 2.3 billion subscribers.  more

NEC Receives World’s First IMS-Based Femtocell System Order

NEC says that it has received an order from Japanese operator, Softbank Mobile for what it says is the world's first ims-based (IP Multimedia Subsystem) femtocell system. ims-based femtocell systems consist of ims Cores, femtocell gateways and femtocell access points.  more

3GPP Adds 3G Support to UMA Standard

UMA Today - a consortium of companies promoting UMA/GAN technology - has announced that the 3GPP standards body completed a specification update effort last week that added 3G (Iu-interface) support to the UMA/GAN standard. With the 3G version of the 3GPP UMA/GAN standard now complete, the vendor community is rapidly developing UMA-based 3G dual-mode handset and femtocell products in anticipation of operator service deployments later this year.  more

Would Comcast Have a Problem with Femtocells?

Earlier this week, US cable provider Comcast attempted to justify its practice of hampering certain file-sharing applications by telling the FCC that it was an efficient way to keep web traffic flowing smoothly on its network. In their statement, Comcast said it, "only affect the protocols that have a demonstrated history of generating excessive burdens on the network." more

Fixed Mobile Faces Problems Without Increased Vendor Co-Operation

Informa Telecoms & Media is forecasting that there will be 170 million Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) subscribers by 2012 generating US$33.4 billion of revenue, but caution that without an increase in cooperation between all of the value chain players involved the industry faces an uphill struggle.  more
