IMS equipment market thriving; revenue up 108% in 2Q09, led by Ericsson, Huawei

Worldwide sales of ims equipment jumped 108% between 1Q09 and 2Q09, to $164 million, reports Infonetics Research. ­While Ericsson has long led the ims market in overall number of network deployments, Huawei, Nokia Siemens, and Alcatel-Lucent are providing serious competition.  more

Telenor Sweden Deploys Acme Packet to Deliver IMS-based Services

Ericsson Wins IMS Contract with O2 Germany

Ericsson has been selected to provide Telefónica O2 Germany with an ims core system with an ims-based VoIP application server. These two contracts include hardware deployment and software systems integration services. Ericsson will also integrate in Germany O2's VoIP application server using ims, making services such as IP Centrex, business trunking or presence functionality available to all fixed and mobile users.  more

Giesecke & Devrient Holds Off Challenge from Oberthur Technologies

Number three smart card manufacturer Oberthur Technologies (up 1.4% YOY in 2008) closed the gap on Giesecke & Devrient in second place last year to less than one percent market share difference following its acquisition of XPonCard. However, the latest market analysis from ims Research shows that the German company, after reporting record turnover and profits in 2008, maintained its position as the second largest manufacturer of smart cards globally, behind market leader Gemalto. Sagem Orga (up 1.3%) and Watchdata Systems (up 1.5%) were the other two companies calculated to have made the biggest gains last year.  more

Fragmentation Poses Chief Threat to Android Platform Growth

The Android platform appears poised for considerable growth in 2009, but some hurdles for the platform remain. Google’s senior director of mobile platforms, Andy Rubin, announced on May 27th that its Android platform will appear on at least 18 handset models, designed by 8 or 9 OEMs, in 2009. Bouygues Telecom to Trial Alcatel-Lucent's IMS Platform

France's Bouygues Telecom has contracted with Alcatel-Lucent to deploy an ims pilot network that enables the operator to test new multimedia communications services that are based on the GSM Association’s “Rich Communication Suite” specifications. The tests will take place during the second half of 2009.  more

SIM Card Market Defying the Downturn

The latest data from ims Research shows that the SIM card market continues to defy the economic downturn that is currently hitting the mobile market. Total shipments of SIM cards in 2008 grew to reach the record number of 3.07 billion. This is in marked contrast to the numbers from manufacturers which showed handset shipments declining sharply in the second half of the year.  more
