Smartphone Shipments in Malaysia Expected to Fall in 2009
Results from idc's Asia/Pacific Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, 4Q 2008, shows that sales of converged mobile devices (smartphones) in Malaysia dropped by 3% sequentially in the fourth quarter of 2008 (4Q08), but shipments for the full 2008 grew slightly to reach 1.2 million units. The market stayed afloat with strong consumer demand for data-centric converged mobile devices, which continued to beat market expectations by growing 80% year-on-year, while voice-centric converged mobile devices declined by 9%. more

According to idc's European Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 9.3 million units, 25.9% higher than the 7.4 million shipped in 4Q07. Financial Crisis Hits Mobile Phone Sales as Q3 Shipment Growth Slows
The worldwide mobile phone industry felt the impact of the global financial crisis in the third quarter of 2008 (3Q08) as total handset shipments were down significantly over previous quarters. Mobile phone manufacturers shipped a total of 299.0 million handsets in 3Q08, up 3.2% from last year, and down -0.4% over 2Q08. The third quarter of the year has historically been a ramp-up quarter as manufacturers load their sales channels with handsets in preparation for the holiday season, producing year-over-year growth rates as high as 20% as a result. This year has not witnessed a similar ramp up, largely due to the current economic situation. more

According to idc's Western European Quarterly Mobile Phone Market Tracker, the Western European mobile phone market (consisting of traditional mobile phones and converged devices) witnessed healthy year-on-year growth of 20% in 2Q05. Shipments reached 37.6 million units, predominantly driven by increased traction in low-end segments and renewal demand for new feature-rich handsets, with sequential growth of 4% raising expectations for total 2005 market growth. In light of healthy 2Q market growth, idc's short-range forecast predicts the Western European total mobile phone market will grow 11% year on year in 2005. more
