Request to Delay Number Portability in South Africa
South Africa's MNP Industry Steering Committee has sent a letter of request to the telecoms regulator, icasa to consider an extension of the implementation date of Mobile Number Portability (MNP), which was scheduled for 18 September 2006. The request for extension can be ascribed to the technically complex nature of Mobile Number Portability which requires new business processes to be designed and implemented between operators and service providers, between operators and operators and between operators and third parties. more

Mobile Number Portability - How Loyal Are You To Your Network?
21% of South Africa's cell phone users believe that they will change networks once mobile number portability (MNP) comes into play, a recent Synovate survey has revealed. No Ban On Handset Subsidies Planned
South Africa's telecoms regulator, icasa has concluded their study into handset subsidies in the country, and decided not to ban subsidies on the sales of handsets with contracts. The enquiry was motivated by consumer interest mainly in respect to the effective implementation of mobile number portability and the 24 month contracts that customers sign with service providers. Amongst others, concerns were that Mobile Operators and Service Providers offer handset subsidies to contract customers under the pretext of a "free" phone. more
