FOCUS: MTS ready to dump i-mode project

MOSCOW, July 31 (Prime-Tass) -- Having faced sinking average revenues per user (ARPU) for about a year, Russian mobile operators launched several projects aimed at enticing subscribers to use more income-generating non-voice services. While the jury is still out whether the Khameleon project of Russia?s second largest mobile operator VimpelCom and the MegaFon PRO project of the third largest mobile operator MegaFon are successful, Russia's largest mobile operator MTS has admitted that its i-mode project, introduced in September 2005, is a failure. MTS blamed the problems with this project on lack of mobile handsets. more

I-Mode Launched in Singapore

DoCoMo has reported that Singapore's StarHub launched its i-mode service over the weekend. The service, which will be offered over StarHub's GPRS and W-CDMA networks, marks the opening of the 15th market for i-mode, following Japan, Germany, the Netherlands, Taiwan, Belgium, France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Australia, Israel, Russia, England and Ireland, in that order. more

NEC's Mobile Internet Platform selected by O2

NEC says that it has supplied the Mobile Internet Platform for O2's forthcoming i-mode service. O2's i-mode operations are scheduled to start this autumn in the UK and Ireland. NEC ships 3G i-mode handset

NEC says that it has developed its first i-mode 3G terminal "N600i" for an operator outside Japan and has commenced delivery of the terminal for Cosmote, the largest mobile operator in Greece.
