Italy's Ministry of Economic Development has announced that three of the country's four incumbent operators have submitted bids for additional 3G radio spectrum. Telecom Italy, Vodafone and Wind have submitted bids, but hutchison 3G Italy (3 Italia) chose not to, despite requesting tender documents. more

EU calls on mobile operators to continue to improve child safety policies
Half of 10 year-old, 87% of 13 year-old and 95% of 16 year-old children in the EU have a mobile phone, but half of European parents worry mobile phone use might expose their children to sexually and violently explicit images (51%) or bullying by other children (49%), according to a survey. The European Commission has now called on mobile operators to do more to keep children safe while using mobile phones by putting in place all the measures in the voluntary code of conduct, signed by 26 mobile operators in 2007. more

3 Italia Denies Report of 3G Network Break-Up
In a terse statement, 3 Italia has firmly denied the story published by Sole 24 Ore regarding the sale of company assets to Italian competitors. The newspaper had reported that hutchison Whampoa's Italian subsidiary had held talks which could have lead to the break up, and effective shut-down of the network as a going concern. more

Italian Market continues to slow but Wind weathers storm
For the second successive quarter the Italian mobile market saw a net loss to its customer base, a decline of 0.17m taking the total below 85m with an end-quarter figure of 84.93m. Almost a quarter of a million customers were lost in the first half of the year. As a result, annual net additions were at their lowest level for four years with a twelve-month gain of 4.08m, while proportionate growth of 5.0% was the worst figure for five years. more

Wind Delays Italian Tower Sale
Italian telecoms operator, Wind has decided to postpone the sale of its transmission towers, citing difficult market conditions. Wind has combined its tower operations with those of rival operator, hutchison 3G and planned a joint sale to raise between EUR1.5 billion to EUR2 billion (US$2.2 - US$2.8 billion). The sale involves around 18,000 towers. more

Hutchison Whampoa Considering Sale of Italian 3G Operator
hutchison 3G Italy is reported to be up for sale to a trade buyer, following a failed attempt to float the company on the Italian stock market a couple of years ago. The London Times newspaper reports that hutchison Whampoa is understood to have sent out an information memorandum in the hope of unearthing potential bidders for the Italian division. The company has already been looking to sell its towers operation, by merging them with rival operator, Wind and floating the company - which could be worth around US$2.8 billion. more
