Hutchison Warns Off Possible Indian Tax Liability in Sale to Vodafone
hutchison Telecom International has accepted that it might have to make some payments in regards to the ongoing tax dispute in India over the sale of its stake in hutchison Essar to Vodafone in May 2007. Although the transaction technically occurred outside India, the government has been suing Vodafone for up to US$2 billion in sales tax that it claims is owed to it. more

Three Bidders for Italian 3G Radio Spectrum
Italy's Ministry of Economic Development has announced that three of the country's four incumbent operators have submitted bids for additional 3G radio spectrum. Telecom Italy, Vodafone and Wind have submitted bids, but hutchison 3G Italy (3 Italia) chose not to, despite requesting tender documents. more

EU calls on mobile operators to continue to improve child safety policies
Half of 10 year-old, 87% of 13 year-old and 95% of 16 year-old children in the EU have a mobile phone, but half of European parents worry mobile phone use might expose their children to sexually and violently explicit images (51%) or bullying by other children (49%), according to a survey. The European Commission has now called on mobile operators to do more to keep children safe while using mobile phones by putting in place all the measures in the voluntary code of conduct, signed by 26 mobile operators in 2007. more

Vodafone Raises Debt for Indian Expansion
Vodafone Essar, the company's Indian subsidiary is reported to have sucessfully raised around Rs 10,000 crore (US$2 billion) in a 5-year debt financing for network expansion and the forthcoming 3G license auction. The loan was arranged by the State Bank of India Capital Markets. more

O2, Vodafone Reported to be in Network Sharing Talks
UK operators, O2 and Vodafone are reported to be in advanced talks regarding sharing their network infrastructure. Citing people close to the talks, the Financial Times that a deal "could provide them with significant savings in capital and operating spending". Vodafone's CEO, Vittorio Collao is currently seeking annual cost savings of £1bn by 2010-11 to bring the UK divisions' operating margins up to the average compared to its other country networks. more

Hutchison Telecom Confirms Spin-Off Plans for Hong Kong Holdings
Hong Kong based hutchison Telecom has reported a 16% rise in full-year revenues to HK$24 billion (US$3.1 billion) and an increase of 16.8% in EBITDA to HK$6.14 billion (US$791 million). Net income dropped precipitously to HK$1.88 billion (US$242 million) from the extraordinary HK66.8 billion a year ago - which was largely due to the one-off gain from the sale of its Indian interests to Vodafone. more

Vodafone, Hutchison Whampoa to Merge Australian Networks
Vodafone and hutchison Whampoa have announced plans to merge their Australian networks to form a single mobile operator. Both companies will own 50% of the joint venture - which will retain the Vodafone brand name, although they retain the rights to the "three" brand as well. To equalise the value difference between the respective businesses, Vodafone will receive a deferred payment of A$500 million (US$337 million) from the joint venture company, VHA (Vodafone hutchison Australia). more

Vodafone Raising Funds for India's 3G Auction
Vodafone Essar is reported to be currently trying to raise US$2 billion as a bridging loan to finance its bids in the country's delayed 3G and WiMAX auctions. The current reserve price for the 3G auction is US$412 million to cover all the available circles - although the auction has been delayed as the Finance Ministry is battling to double the reserve to at least US$824 million. more
