Hutchison Whampoa Full-Year Profits Down 43% on One-Off Items
Hong Kong based conglomerate, hutchison Whampoa has reported a 43 percent slump in 2008 to HK$17.7 billion (US$2.3 billion) - from HK$30.6 billion (US$3.9 billion). The results were however higher than the average forecasts of HK$15.5 billion, according to analysts polled by Thomson Reuters. The reduction in income was due to the removal of a one-off exceptional profit from a year earlier. Revenues grew by 13 percent to HK$348 billion (US$44.9 billion) for the full year. more

Vodafone, Hutchison Whampoa to Merge Australian Networks
Vodafone and hutchison Whampoa have announced plans to merge their Australian networks to form a single mobile operator. Both companies will own 50% of the joint venture - which will retain the Vodafone brand name, although they retain the rights to the "three" brand as well. To equalise the value difference between the respective businesses, Vodafone will receive a deferred payment of A$500 million (US$337 million) from the joint venture company, VHA (Vodafone hutchison Australia). more

Wi-Fi roaming provider, iPass announced a partnership agreement with 3 Scandinavia, part of the hutchison Whampoa 3 Group of companies, which will provide iPass customers with access to its 3G network in Sweden - including mobile data in-bundle roaming into Denmark. Under the terms of the agreement, iPass will integrate 3's HSDPA and HSUPA network into its iPass Mobile Office service, which unifies remote and mobile connectivity across more than 160 countries. more

ZTE Ships 100 Millionth Mobile Phone
China's ZTE says that it has achived a sales record of 100 million handsets. ZTE originally started selling its handsets on a large-scale basis in 2002, with initial output reaching 1.8 million units and by 2004, ZTE had made 11 million units. To sustain the momentum and keep pace with stiff competition in the global handset arena, ZTE changed its handset business strategy from 2005 and opted to collaborate with global telecom carriers and service providers to further expand its global reach. more

Hutchison Whampoa Profits Rise on Lower 3G Loses
Hong Kong conglomerate, hutchison Whampoa has posted a first half profit which beat the average of analyst estimates on lower loses from its 3G operations and higher port and energy earnings. The company reported that net income dropped 63 percent to HK$10.7 billion ($1.4 billion), after taking out the HK$35.8 billion gain from selling its Indian investment to Vodafone a year earlier. more
