Hutchison Reports Record 2007 Profits on Disposals
Hutchison Telecom has reported a record annual profit of HK$67,776 million (US$8.7 billion) for last year, thanks largely to disposals. Turnover increased by 13.8% to HK$20,401 million (US$2.63 billion) reflecting a 57% growth in the customer base to nearly 10 million, increased usage especially in 3G and favourable foreign currency exchange rates. EBITDA increased to HK$5,253 million despite losses at start up operations in Indonesia and Vietnam, and HK$223 million non-cash charge for employee stock options, representing an EBITDA margin of 25.7%. Excluding the start up operations the EBITDA margin would have been 29.4%. more

Vietnamese Operator Confirms CDMA to GSM Migration
Vietnamese CDMA operator, HT Mobile says that it has been granted permission from the Ministry of Information and Communications to migrate its network over to the GSM platform. The company expects to retain use of its existing 800Mhz spectrum and reuse up to 80% of its old equipment. more

Hutchison Telecom Takes $494 Million Charge on Thai Write-Down
Hong Kong based Hutchison Telecom that it is to recognise a non-cash impairment charge of HK$3,854 million (US$494 million) in its 2007 audited consolidated financial statements in connection with the Group's investments in its mobile telecommunications business in Thailand. The company blamed an ongoing price war in the Thai market as being the primary reason for the write-down. more

Vietnamese Operator Wants to Switch from CDMA to GSM
Vietnam's HT Mobile is reported to have requested permission from the Ministry of Information and Communications for permission to migrate its network from CDMA to the GSM standard. Citing an unnamed source, local newspaper, VietNamNet Bridge said that government officials met last week to discuss the request from the mobile operator. more

Hutchison Telecom Macau Launches HSDPA Upgrade
Hutchison Telecom Macau - which trades as Three - has launched a HSDPA upgrade to its network today, according to NEC Corp, who had provided the network upgrade. Vodafone Gets Name Change Permission in India
India's Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) has approved the formal name change in the mobile joint venture Hutch Essar to Vodafone Essar following Vodafone's recent purchase of a majority stake in the firm. Vodafone is now expected to phase out the Hutch brand name over the next few months in favour of Vodafone Essar. more
