EU calls on mobile operators to continue to improve child safety policies
Half of 10 year-old, 87% of 13 year-old and 95% of 16 year-old children in the EU have a mobile phone, but half of European parents worry mobile phone use might expose their children to sexually and violently explicit images (51%) or bullying by other children (49%), according to a survey. The European Commission has now called on mobile operators to do more to keep children safe while using mobile phones by putting in place all the measures in the voluntary code of conduct, signed by 26 mobile operators in 2007. more

Hutchison Shows off First In-House Developed Mobile Phone
Hutchison Whampoa has shown off the first of its new in-house designed mobile phones, which will be sold under the INQ brandname. The INQ¹ (yes, with a tiny 1) has been designed to offer a tight integration with the Facebook social networking website, and will be available exclusively from the Hutchison 3G mobile networks. more

Wind Delays Italian Tower Sale
Italian telecoms operator, Wind has decided to postpone the sale of its transmission towers, citing difficult market conditions. Wind has combined its tower operations with those of rival operator, Hutchison 3G and planned a joint sale to raise between EUR1.5 billion to EUR2 billion (US$2.2 - US$2.8 billion). The sale involves around 18,000 towers. more

Hutchison Whampoa Considering Sale of Italian 3G Operator
Hutchison 3G Italy is reported to be up for sale to a trade buyer, following a failed attempt to float the company on the Italian stock market a couple of years ago. The London Times newspaper reports that Hutchison Whampoa is understood to have sent out an information memorandum in the hope of unearthing potential bidders for the Italian division. The company has already been looking to sell its towers operation, by merging them with rival operator, Wind and floating the company - which could be worth around US$2.8 billion. more

The Greek telecoms regulator, the National Post and Telecommunications Commission has said that seven companies submitted opinions on the Greek 3G auction. The companies are Orange, Hutchison 3G Europe, Wind Telecommunicazioni, DEH Telecoms and the three existing GSM networks, CosmOTE, STET Hellas and Panafon Vodafone. The formal tender document will be published on June 1st." more
