EU calls on mobile operators to continue to improve child safety policies
Half of 10 year-old, 87% of 13 year-old and 95% of 16 year-old children in the EU have a mobile phone, but half of European parents worry mobile phone use might expose their children to sexually and violently explicit images (51%) or bullying by other children (49%), according to a survey. The European Commission has now called on mobile operators to do more to keep children safe while using mobile phones by putting in place all the measures in the voluntary code of conduct, signed by 26 mobile operators in 2007. more

EU Investigating Mobile Operators Over Blocking of VoIP Services
The European Union is looking at whether blocks on VoIP service by Europe's mobile phone operators might breach competition laws. The European Commission, the EU antitrust authority has sent letters to each of the mobile phone operators asking them what actions, if any, they take to affect internet based voice calls. more

KPN considering hostile takeover of mmO2
KPN has refused to rule out a hostile takeover bid for mmO2 after their latest round of friendly talks collapsed. KPN says that it approached mmO2 regarding a friendly takeover, but the company broke off talks last week. Any takeover would cost KPN at least US$19 billion. more

NEC out-sources 3G production to China
NEC and has announced an agreement in principle for the USA based, Solectron to provide manufacturing and after-sales services for NEC's 3G handsets. In an expansion of the relationship between the two companies, Solectron would be the outsourced manufacturer of NEC's 3G mobile terminal products, or handsets, for markets outside of Japan. NEC, which currently produces these products in Japan, plans to gradually transfer production to Solectron's facility in Suzhou, China, after initial pilot production of each new product in Japan. more
