EU calls on mobile operators to continue to improve child safety policies
Half of 10 year-old, 87% of 13 year-old and 95% of 16 year-old children in the EU have a mobile phone, but half of European parents worry mobile phone use might expose their children to sexually and violently explicit images (51%) or bullying by other children (49%), according to a survey. The European Commission has now called on mobile operators to do more to keep children safe while using mobile phones by putting in place all the measures in the voluntary code of conduct, signed by 26 mobile operators in 2007. more

Hutchison 3G Ireland Awards Satellite Based Broadband Contract
Avanti Communications, a broadband satellite operator, says that it has been awarded a contract by Hutchison 3G Ireland to supply them with broadband internet access under the Irish Government's National Broadband Scheme. This EUR 43 million scheme is designed to bring broadband services to communities all over Ireland which are out of the reach of terrestrial alternatives. The contract has an expected value to Avanti of EUR 5.3 million over 3 years. more

Irish Government to Expand Mobile Broadband Coverage to Rural Areas
Hutchison 3G Ireland ('3') has won a contract from the Irish government to develop a national broadband network covering rural areas of the country. Ireland currently has over 1.2 million subscribers to broadband. The National Broadband Scheme will provide the remaining 10% of the population, or approximately 33% of the area of the country, with broadband services. Ireland will have 100% coverage by September 2010; half of the area under the scheme will be covered by the end of this year. more

EU Investigating Mobile Operators Over Blocking of VoIP Services
The European Union is looking at whether blocks on VoIP service by Europe's mobile phone operators might breach competition laws. The European Commission, the EU antitrust authority has sent letters to each of the mobile phone operators asking them what actions, if any, they take to affect internet based voice calls. more

Setback for O2 in Hutchison 3G UK Trademark Dispute
A legal opinion from the European Court of Justice has found that the use of a competitors trademark in an advertisement is permitted under EU advertising rules. The decison comes from an appeal by UK operator O2 over the use of its "bubbles" trademark in an advert by rival operator, Hutchison 3G UK. more

Hutch 3G Opening Stores in Ireland
Hutchison 3G Ireland has announced plans to open up to twenty eight of its own stores across the country by the end of 2007. The 3Store expansion will create over two hundred new jobs by the end of 2007 and will involve a EUR10 to EUR15 million investment in the Irish market. more

Hutchison 3G makes mobile number portability complaint
Hutchison 3G's Austrian division has made a complaint to the Austrian regulatory authority against T-Mobile, One, Telering, Telekom Austria and UTA regarding a solution to implement Mobile Number Portability (MNP). The company says that it had been in negotiations for 9 months before deciding to report the matter to the regulator. more
