Wind Delays Italian Tower Sale
Italian telecoms operator, Wind has decided to postpone the sale of its transmission towers, citing difficult market conditions. Wind has combined its tower operations with those of rival operator, Hutchison 3G and planned a joint sale to raise between EUR1.5 billion to EUR2 billion (US$2.2 - US$2.8 billion). The sale involves around 18,000 towers. more

ZTE Wins 3G Handset Order from Hutchison 3G
China's ZTE has been selected by Hutchison 3G Italy (3) to produce two handsets which have been designed by Italian design center, MOMODESIGN. The MD2 is a 3G clamshell handset, while MD3 is a DVB-H and HSDPA videophone, adopting chipset Qualcomm MSM 6280, with a form factor featuring touch screen functions and with a screen that rotates 360, enabling all-rounded video viewing. more

Could this be the year Hong Kong conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa finally gets a payoff on its $25 billion bet on 3G mobile-phone technology? Based on the scant value the markets assign Hutchison's loss-making third-generation phone operations, investors aren't counting on it.
