O2, Vodafone Reported to be in Network Sharing Talks

UK operators, O2 and Vodafone are reported to be in advanced talks regarding sharing their network infrastructure. Citing people close to the talks, the Financial Times that a deal "could provide them with significant savings in capital and operating spending". Vodafone's CEO, Vittorio Collao is currently seeking annual cost savings of £1bn by 2010-11 to bring the UK divisions' operating margins up to the average compared to its other country networks.  more

UK Operators Facing Further Cuts in Mobile Termination Rates

The UK's Competition Commission has ruled that the mobile operators should lower their landline to mobile termination rates by around 20% by 2010/11 - and to a rate which is lower than was proposed by the telecoms regulator, Ofcom.  more

O2 Loses Legal Action Against Hutchison 3G UK

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has ruled that Hutchison 3G UK did not breach trademark law when it used a marketing icon belonging to rival UK operator, O2 in one of its advertisements. O2 uses bubble images in a host of ways and is the proprietor of two British national trade marks which consist of a static picture of bubbles.  more

Setback for O2 in Hutchison 3G UK Trademark Dispute

A legal opinion from the European Court of Justice has found that the use of a competitors trademark in an advertisement is permitted under EU advertising rules. The decison comes from an appeal by UK operator O2 over the use of its "bubbles" trademark in an advert by rival operator, Hutchison 3G UK.  more
