Telefonica Announces Wide-Spread Trials of LTE Networks

­Telefonica says that it has reached an agreement with six LTE technology providers to launch LTE test projects in six different countries. The suppliers Telefonica has chosen so far: Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, huawei, NEC, Nokia Siemens Networks and ZTE, will start rolling out the equipment necessary for testing the technology during the coming months.  more

O2 Germany to Upgrade Network to Support 28Mbps Data Download Speeds

Telefónica O2 Germany has announced plans to upgrade its network to HSPA+, and start offering peak download speeds of up to 28Mbps in the second half of this year. The network upgrade will initially occur in Munich - where O2 has its headquarters. more

Huawei Wins Service Delivery Contract from Telefonica

huawei and Telefónica have signed a framework contract to deploy a new "Service Delivery Platform" (SDP) serving all countries in Telefónica's Latin American region. The SDP platform, to be commercially launched during the first half of 2009, unifies the delivery of value-added services and eases the process of implementing new services. The SDP opens the possibility of offering convergence services, for both fixed and mobile networks, as well as for residential and enterprise markets.  more

Trials of 3G at 900Mhz Completed in Spain

Qualcomm, Telefonica Spain and huawei have completed a 3G UMTS and HSDPA field trial using 900 MHz spectrum in Talarrubias, located in the Extremadura region of Spain. The trial results validated that UMTS can co-exist with GSM at 900 MHz. Furthermore, it was proven that the propagation advantage of 900 MHz may be used to extend the significant spectral efficiency gains of UMTS for voice and data coverage relative to 2100 MHz that is currently used in European 3G markets.  more

Which Operator will be the First to Launch Femtos in Europe?

Trials of Femto's in Europe have already started and IMS Research says that they expect that the first deployments will start in the first half of 2008. Following Sprint Nextel's limited launch for its Airave product from Samsung, announced this September, questions have been arising as to which operator will be first to launch in Europe.  more
